Possible chemical pregnancy?
Answer:
A chemical pregnancy is a miscarriage that happens within a week or so of the due menstrual period. I have read that as many as 8 out of 10 women have either experienced one or will experience one in their lifetime. A lot of times, these early miscarriages are overlooked as a heavy menstrual bleeding and or a period that lasts a little longer than usual. The reason I am writing about this in the Trying To Conceive section is that chemical pregnancies are fairly common and many times a woman on this journey will discover that she has indeed experienced an early miscarriage. Most women discover they are having an early miscarriage if they are charting their fertility signs and are actively trying to become pregnant. Many women can achieve a positive home pregnancy test as early as 10 days post ovulation and some tests can even detect pregnancy much earlier. Because of the sensitivity of some home pregnancy tests - a women who knows exactly when she ovulates can test even before the menstrual period is due.
There are several different reasons why chemical pregnancies occur. Some of the time, the reason may never be discovered. The reasons why these occur are: low progesterone, insufficient uterine lining, genetic problems, immune issues (see www.inciid.org for more information) and possible obstructions in the uterus, such as fibroid tumors (depending on their location). There are a number of tests that can be run to determine why chemical pregnancies occur, though not all of the time a reason will be found.
I have had two such miscarriages - both occurring around the time my menstrual cycle was due. Both times I bled for eight days, instead of the normal five, and had a lot of cramping. I found out about the first one when I went to the emergency room for what I thought was appendicitis. A blood pregnancy test came out positive and they ran a quantitative hCG. My low numbers showed that I was possibly miscarrying. The doctor told me that if I did not start bleeding within a week to see my ob/gyn doctor and possibly schedule a D&C. Two days later I began to bleed. The second time it happened I was charting my fertility signs, and with my triphasic temperatures (a third level of high temperatures) at 11 days post ovulation I had a positive home pregnancy test. However, my basal body temperature took a nose dive the next day, and the day after that I started bleeding
Once it has been established that a woman has suffered an early miscarriage, there are some things that can be done to help prevent future ones. Some doctors won't do anything until two or more miscarriages occur. However, there are a few who will start the testing to find the reason behind miscarriages right away. See www.inciid.org for articles and commentaries on miscarriages and even interact with the doctors on the site and others who have gone through this. Possible treatments include heparin, aspirin, immune testing, genetic counseling, progesterone and other drugs such as Clomid.

This happened to me and it was a chemical pregnancy!!!I had two faint positives and then started!!! My doctor said it was a chemical pregnancy and I'd never even heard of it!! He said it is so common and the only ones that know it happened had tested early! The rest assumed they did not conceive when their period came! Good luck, you will conceive soo, it does not hurt you or your chances!! I wish you all the best!!!!!
