I use the link below to tell me about when I'm going to ovulate. You simply plug in the first day of your last period and the average length of your cycles and it will give you your ovulation window. When we're TTC, we treat everyday in that window as if I'm ovulating.
I've never bought an ovulation kit. I've been using this link since my husband and I started TTC. It has worked wonderfully so far!

Most women ovulate 14 days BEFORE their NEXT period. If your cycle is not always exactly 28 days, there is no way to predict which day that will be. You can monitor your temperature and mucus to determine ovulation.

You are LEAST likely to get pregnant immediately before and after your period, although it is possible if your cycle is wacky. It is downright scary that some women don't understand this stuff.

Start by charting your menstrual cycle.
The cycle begins on your first day of your period, and ends on the day before the first day of your next period. This will tell you how many days you have in your cycle. You will need to know for a couple of months or so, to be accurate...so keep a diary or write it down somewhere. Figure out when you ovulate by counting days as well. Some women ovulate 7 days after first day of period, others more. It depends on you. Most women can tell they are ovulating due to pain right in the area of the tubes, and that area will become sensitive. If you can not tell, go w/ the 7-10 days after rule - but this is based on a 28 day cycle. If you are, for example, 21 days as a norm (on average), you'll need to modify this to maybe 5-8 days after. This will tell you when you are very fertile.

from what i have learned you start trying about one to two weeks after your cycle you have to pay attention to your mentrual cycle to find out. its different for everyone. the man on the other hand has to have strong sperm cells to swim up and fertilize the egg. therefore he should not be having sex or mensterbate for at least two to three weeks before trying to have a baby.

i have a little round thing that after putting in you first day of your last period it tells you the most likely day that you will conceive. u can get these from your Doctor. i have 2 little girls and the first one i looked at this and sat up side down on the couch, no joke, and shur enough first time we tried we conceived her. the second time it was not on purpose but the day we had sex is right on the day that it said i got pregnant. there is also something about your temperature and that is higher on your fertile days. I think u have to take it anal though.
