Finished Breastfeeding 8 months ago, but still producing milk. Can I get pregnant?

I stopped breastfeeding 8 months ago when my son started to turn down my attempts to breastfeed (he was almost 1 yr) but everyday since then I'm still producing a small amount of milk from both breasts. The amount isn't enough for me to feel engorged/heavy but I'm wondering if this is going to cause any issues when trying to conceive. Also, I've been getting my period on a regular basis for over a year. Any advice/info would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:
Yes, you can get pregnant. Lactating is not birth control. That is a myth. Be careful if your son does not want a little brother or sister.
Of course you can get pregnant...I have a friend that has 10 kids..all single births...got pregnant while nursing everytime but the first one.
You can get pregnant within days of giving birth whether you are breast feeding or not. The idea that you cannot conceive whilst lactating is an old wives tale. You are more than able to get pregnant again as long as there are no other complications, good luck!
No you can still conceive when breast feeding thats just a myth...my friend just had twins 2 weeks ago the doctor told her to use cabbage for the swelling but she said it helped dry the milk
this also happened to me, it took forever for me to dry out completely, if you are having regular periods, then you are ovulating just fine and should not have any problem getting pregnant again, good luck.
I got pregnant when my daughter turned 10 months, and I was still nursing her. But my progesterone levels were off and I lost the child at 6 weeks. I got my period back about 6 months after my first was born. Breastfeeding doesn't stop it, but it definitely lowers your chances. Check out Leleche League (lll.org, I think). There should be some good info on there.

P.S. Way to go nursing him that long! It's sad when people just give up.
I suggest you see your doctor as you shouldn't be producing milk until now if you stopped nursing 8 months ago. You might be producing too much prolactin (determinable by a blood test), whose levels would have been high when you were feeding but should now have returned to normal. This is easily treatable - your doctor will prescrible something for this. High prolactin levels can reduce your likelihood of conception until treated. So if you are trying to conceive then yes all the more reason to see your GP now. Good luck.
yes you can get pregnant, as you have started to ovulate again. also.still producing milk is nothing. just because you have stopped breastfeeding does not mean milk will not be produced. mothers still have milk even after two years of their chid's birth.
Lactating has absolutely nothing to do if you can get PG or not. Many women conceive while still nursing and then nurse the older child right through the pregnancy! It is a myth that you can't get PG while lactating. If you are having your period, you can get PG.

As for the milk you're still producing..it can take a few months for some moms to dry up. STOP CHECKING. If you are "checking" to see if you still have milk, you are stimulating yourself to keep producing it.
You shouldn't have any problems getting pregnant but you should probably get your breasts checked out asap. I'm still lactating 6 years after the birth of my son yet the 5 doctors that checked me out say that there is nothing they can do to stop it.
if your still getting you period regularity then producing breast milk still shouldn't inter fear with you getting pregnant
It's normal to continue producing a bit of milk even after you wean. "Checking" to see if you have milk by hand-expressing some will stimulate your body to make more milk, so resist the temptation to do that. :) If you are producing large quantities of milk then you should consider seeing a doctor.

It is totally possible to get pregnant while lactating (I did, on purpose!)

You can have your period and not be ovulating. Try using ovulation predictor kits or charting your basal body temperature upon first waking to see if you are ovulating (the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler is a great reference on how to do that). Good luck!
